Freelance Rate Calculator for Indian Developers

Most freelancers pick a rate by asking a friend. This works backwards from the number that actually matters — what you want left in your account at the end of the year — through tax, expenses and the hours you can genuinely bill.

Why the number is always higher than you think

Take an engineer who wants ₹15,00,000 a year in hand. Divided by a nominal 2,000-hour year that reads like ₹750 an hour, so that is what they quote. Then reality applies three multipliers:

Run the three together and the honest rate for that ₹15,00,000 target is roughly double the naive figure. This is the arithmetic behind the familiar complaint that freelancing “does not pay more than a job” — it does, but only if the rate is set correctly.

The tax picture, briefly

Software development is a specified profession under section 44ADA. If your gross receipts stay under ₹75 lakh and under 5% of them are in cash, you can declare 50% of receipts as profit and skip detailed books. For a developer whose real expenses are a laptop, a few subscriptions and some cloud spend, that is a substantial and entirely legitimate reduction.

On top of that, GST registration kicks in at ₹20 lakh of service turnover. Domestic invoices carry 18%. Exports of service are zero-rated — file a Letter of Undertaking and you bill foreign clients without adding GST, while still filing returns. Getting this wrong in either direction is expensive, so treat the flags in the calculator as prompts to talk to a CA, not as a ruling.

Rate benchmarks, honestly stated

There is no authoritative table for this and anyone presenting one is guessing. What is reliably true: the same engineer is paid very differently depending on where the client is, and the gap is larger than any skill gap. If you are billing Indian startups at Indian rates, the highest-leverage change available to you is not getting better at React — it is finding clients in a different currency.

Frequently asked

How much should a freelance developer charge in India?

Rates vary far more by client geography than by skill. Indian domestic clients commonly pay ₹800–₹2,500 an hour for experienced full-stack work; US and EU clients for the same engineer typically pay $25–$80 an hour. The right way to pick a number is backwards: decide the annual take-home you want, divide by the hours you can realistically bill, and gross up for tax and expenses. That is what the calculator above does.

Why can I not just divide my salary by 2,000 hours?

Because a salaried year has paid leave, benefits, an employer covering half your PF, and — crucially — no unbilled time. A freelancer spends a large share of the week on sales, invoicing, scoping and admin, none of which is billable. Assuming 40 billable hours a week is the single most common way Indian freelancers underprice themselves. 20 to 30 is realistic.

What is section 44ADA and should I use it?

Section 44ADA lets specified professionals — software developers included — with gross receipts up to ₹75 lakh (where cash receipts are under 5%) declare 50% of receipts as taxable profit without maintaining detailed books. If your actual expenses are below half your revenue, which is normal for a solo developer, it is a straightforward win. Above ₹75 lakh you fall outside it and need audited accounts.

When do I need GST as a freelancer in India?

GST registration becomes mandatory once turnover from services crosses ₹20 lakh a year (₹10 lakh in some special-category states). Domestic clients get billed 18% on top of your fee. Export of services to foreign clients is zero-rated — you can file a Letter of Undertaking and bill without charging GST, though you still register and file returns.

Should I charge hourly, daily, or a monthly retainer?

Retainers are worth more than the arithmetic suggests, because they remove the cost of finding the next client. A common structure is a discounted effective hourly rate in exchange for a guaranteed monthly minimum. The calculator shows all three so you can see what a retainer is actually costing you per hour.
